Playing Pick and Choose With Scripture
Ephesians 4 seems to be a passage with which leaders freely engage in pick and choose. We like the fact that God has given us gifts, but we are selective as to which ones he continues to give. We agree that leaders should equip saints to do the work of the ministry, but not all saints. We embrace the call to maturity, but do not extend its pursuit to all believers - just to those who show initiative. We are very cognizant of the need to teach our people how to distinguish between sound doctrine and error, but we are not so proactive at helping our people embrace their new holy and righteous God-like nature. May we stop editing God's vision and DNA for the church and submit to the whole counsel of God. Only then can the church move significantly toward our destiny - a body where everyone is healthy, growing, and full of love, having reached maturity as a whole.
